Simmental
History
Simmental cattle are believed to possible be the oldest and most wide spread cattle breed in the entire world. Even though the first Simmental herd book didn’t actually show up until 1806 in Swiss Canton of Berne, there is evidence of an early breed of Simmental in Western Switzerland that dates back as far as the 1700’s. The Simmental cattle got their name from where the cattle were first bred, Simme Valley, which is in Berner Oberland, Switzerland. They gradually made their way over to Russia,
Africa, and South America and by the 1960’s they were spread worldwide. Simmentals are believed to have shown up in the United States as
early as 1887 in Illinois.
